FAQS

locksmith common questions

Our emergency callout service allows us to receive calls at any time, with charges depending primarily on two factors: when the job is needed and the type of work required. The basic daytime callout fee starts at $138, which does not include labor, necessary parts, and GST. Our regular working hours are from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday, and Saturday mornings from 9am 12 noon. Jobs outside these hours incur extra charges. It is challenging to detail every possible service and fee we offer, but usually, we can provide an approximate estimate over the phone before the job is carried out.

It’s important to be aware that locksmith scammers are very active in Brisbane, especially for emergency jobs outside of regular hours. They often lure victims with a low callout fee, but once they arrive, they claim the lock is very complex and needs to be drilled and replaced. People who need an emergency locksmith are often short on time or desperate, so they usually agree. After the lock is drilled and replaced, the victim receives a highly inflated invoice, which is typically handwritten on a carbon copy invoice book and lacking essential details such as company and GST information, as legally required.

Usually, when we’re called to open a lock, it’s because the keys are either lost or stolen, and less often because the lock is faulty. We can open any lock using a variety of techniques. We have a wide array of tools, but our lock picks are typically used for standard lockouts. Occasionally, a client might have the right key, but the lock still won’t open. In such cases, we might need to drill the lock to access its inner workings. No matter the type of lock, we can always find a way in and a solution to secure the door, even after hours.

The price a locksmith charges typically depends on the nature of the work and the timing of the request. It’s much more affordable to have any job done during business hours, although this isn’t always feasible. For instance, if your keys are stolen, you really need to get the locks changed right away. Similarly, if the lock on your business door is tampered with on a Saturday night, you can’t wait until Monday for repairs or replacement.

A frequent service we provide is making a new key when the original one goes missing. We can quickly create a key that matches the lost one exactly. However, we often need to change the lock to ensure the lost key can’t be used. After all, there’s no point in making a new key if someone else might use the old one to enter. If the lost key fell into a drain or a similar place, changing the lock won’t be necessary. The cost for making a new key or changing the lock varies based on the type of key, such as a MASTER key or a unique lock/key combination. We can always provide a precise estimate if you show us a photo of the lock.

Without doubt its cheaper to change locks yourself however you will need some basic skills. If you get stuck we are happy to step in and my tip is send a photo of your lock to us so we can determine if it’s a common one. Lastly don’t start a ‘do it yourself’ lock change towards the end of a work day. If you get stuck and need help unlocking your front door, getting assistance late in the day can prove problematic.

Rekeying involves altering the internal components of a lock to ensure that an old key can no longer open it. Many people confuse rekeying with the term “lock changing.” Our clients frequently ask us to “change” their locks when their keys have been stolen. Once we understand the reason for the request, we either rekey the lock or replace it entirely. We typically replace a lock if it is damaged beyond repair.

It’s usually cheaper to “rekey “ a lock or locks when the keys have been stolen rather than install completely NEW locks.

If you lose your keys, you might not need to rekey the locks, especially if there’s no chance they can fall into the wrong hands. For instance, if your keys go missing without any identifying information or if they fall down a storm water drain or an elevator shaft, you probably don’t need to worry. However, if someone steals your keys from your home, you must rekey the locks immediately. Failing to do so could lead to your insurance claim being denied if a criminal uses those keys to get into your house.

Bunnings excels at providing hardware, and some of their locks are a great deal. However, Bunnings does not employ locksmiths, so the advice given there may not always be appropriate or useful. If you have any uncertainties, it’s best to call and consult with an expert.
